St. James Church Celebrates Its 200th Foundation Day in Thane
One of the few remaining heritage structures from British rule in Thane, the historic St. James Church has completed 200 years. A small yet meaningful ceremony was held to mark its bicentennial anniversary.
Built on July 25, 1825, the church was originally constructed by British officers from the East India Company. Over the past six months, the church underwent major heritage restoration work. The roof, altar, and children’s area were refurbished, while maintaining the original architectural style.
The renovation work was led by architect Suresh Sukhje and supported by the congregation. The event saw enthusiastic participation from the church community and dignitaries. Reverend Manoj Charan expressed joy and blessings on behalf of the church. A replica of the original church bell was also created.
Deputy Conservator of Mumbai Heritage, Abhijeet Misal, praised the dedication shown in restoring the church. Architect Vikrant Dilawari and conservationist Sattalgarh also guided the project. The St. James Church youth group produced a short YouTube documentary on the church’s history.
Deputy Collectors Dr. Zonal Ismail Mote and Dr. Gnaneshwar Bhope also attended the celebration.
