Thane Hawker Crisis

BJP corporators staged a protest against illegal hawkers at Jambhli Naka, Thane. Protesters condemned the illegal hawkers’ traffic congestion, pedestrian inconvenience, and the administration’s ongoing neglect.

Illegal hawkers now pose a serious threat to Thane’s traffic flow and pedestrian safety. The corporators allege that because of daily collection of “haftas,” no solid action is taken by the administration. Often, hawkers receive advance tips about upcoming raids, allowing them to disappear temporarily only to return once the officials leave. Despite discussions in the Municipal Corporation’s general body meetings, the administration has only provided vague answers and failed to take action. Corporator Mrinal Pendse raised a serious allegation that Bangladeshi citizens are operating as hawkers in the area.

Corporators demand that decisive action must be taken against hawkers coming from Mumbai and other cities, as well as foreign nationals occupying the footpaths and roads. Business licenses should only be given to local, licensed hawkers.
