Rental Safety Net Snaps for Residents

Thane Municipal Corporation issued notices to leave residences in rental housing projects, resulting in approximately 1,400 households experiencing homelessness. Since 2015, these residents have been temporarily relocated there due to road widening work, unsafe buildings, and other changes. Rental housing developments provided by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) served as temporary shelter until permanent rehabilitation.

TMC has given notices to these households for the first time, directing them to pay any outstanding rent and other dues promptly. The rental housing project in question is spread over four buildings in Vartak Nagar, which falls under MLA Pratap Sarnaik’s constituency. While citizens have stated they have no objections to paying the rent, a major issue has arisen because they have been required to hand over their rental homes to the Municipal Corporation by March 25, even after rent has been paid.

As summer approaches, families have important concerns about where to take small children and women. Notably, the state administration has scheduled exams for classes 1–9 until April 22. Next week, hundreds of students living in these rental buildings will begin their exams. Under these circumstances, everyone, including students, will experience mental stress due to the fear of relocation. Residents are now requesting that local leaders, including the MLA, MP, and the state’s Deputy Chief Minister, act immediately to make a decision that brings relief to locals.
