Thyroid Disorders: Prevention, Nutrition, and Treatment Facts

- What are the risk factors for developing thyroid disease?
Thyroid disorders are quite common, especially among women. A family history of thyroid disease, autoimmune disorders, increasing age, pregnancy, iodine deficiency or excess, previous thyroid surgery or radiation to the neck, certain medications, and smoking can all increase the risk. People with diabetes or other autoimmune diseases should also be more vigilant about their thyroid health.
2. What dietary habits can help support thyroid health?
There is no specific “thyroid diet,” but a balanced and nutritious diet plays an important role in maintaining thyroid health. Using iodised salt in moderation, eating foods rich in selenium, iron, zinc, and vitamin D, and including plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and good-quality proteins in the diet are beneficial. It’s also important to avoid excessive iodine supplements unless advised by a doctor. A common misconception is that foods such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and soy should be completely avoided. In reality, these foods are healthy and can be safely consumed in normal quantities, especially when cooked. They do not cause thyroid disease in people with adequate iodine intake. Only excessive consumption of raw forms, particularly in individuals with iodine deficiency, may interfere with thyroid hormone production. Therefore, there is no need to eliminate these nutritious foods from the diet.
3. Can thyroid disorders be managed with lifestyle changes, or is medication always necessary?
A healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and a balanced diet support overall health and may help improve symptoms. However, lifestyle changes alone cannot treat most thyroid disorders. Patients with hypothyroidism usually require thyroid hormone replacement, while those with hyperthyroidism often need specific medical treatment. The key is early diagnosis, regular follow-up, and taking treatment as prescribed. With appropriate care, most people with thyroid disorders can lead completely normal and healthy lives.
