Fine Waiver on Unauthorized Constructions in Thane.

Municipal Corporation to Face ₹200 Crore Revenue Loss.

The number of unauthorized constructions in Thane has been increasing steadily. Despite strict rules, illegal building activities continued, sparking discussions in civic meetings and court cases. However, the Thane Municipal Corporation has decided to waive penalties on such constructions within its limits, as per the urban development department’s orders.

This decision is expected to cause the corporation a financial loss of over ₹200 crore. It is said that the government has allowed protection for certain unauthorized buildings in areas like Kalyan, Mumbra, Diva, and Ghodbunder. Many old structures and chawls have been regularized in these areas.

As per the decision, the Maharashtra government has included 267 areas from 31 municipal regions under this rule. The fine waiver will remain in effect until March 2025. However, to avail the benefit, property owners must submit the required documents and pay the stipulated fees. Critics argue that this move could encourage further illegal constructions.
