Approval Granted for Uttan-Virar Sea Link under Coastal Zone.
Project to Improve Connectivity but Impact Environment.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has received approval from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority to begin work on the Uttan-Virar sea link project. This project is a significant part of the BJP-led government’s infrastructure plans.
The sea link will enhance connectivity across the coastal belt, especially improving links between Palghar and the surrounding areas. It is expected to ease traffic congestion and boost development in the region.
However, the project will also affect the environment. According to reports, about 177.49 hectares of mangroves and forest land will be impacted. Environmentalists have raised concerns, but authorities claim measures will be taken to minimize damage.
The proposed project will have three connectors at Uttan, Vasai, and Virar. The plan was submitted on April 9, and a final decision is expected by July 11. Once completed, the sea link is likely to transform the region’s infrastructure while sparking debates on ecological preservation.
