Is sushi Thane’s new vada pav?

Our iconic ‘vada pav’ has fuelled a generation of commuters, students, and employees – helping them satisfy their 6 o’clock hunger. We have devoured this savoury snack, sometimes even as an alternative to an actual meal. Yet, for the last 2-3 years, there has been a shift in how the city’s younger population views “fast food”, prioritising wellness without sacrificing the “cool” factor. Earlier, sushi was a luxury confined to five-star hotels in South Mumbai. Today, the price gap between a Bombay sandwich and a basic Maki roll is narrowing. With the hype of anime and global travel vlogs, the hesitancy associated with eating seaweed or raw food has vanished. In Thane West, ‘House of Sushi’ provides plant-based sushi rolls, utilising cream cheese, tempura-fried asparagus, and spicy mayonnaise. For a regular student, grabbing a California roll from a sushi cart has become a fashion statement as well. Like vadapav, sushi is also portable, but the difference lies in its status as the ultimate low-calorie and high-“Instagrammability”. The definition of ‘Thane Street Food’ is expanding, where vada pav and sushi rolls can coexist. The station-side stalls will always have long queues, but the evening crowds at sushi carts like the House of Sushi prove that our appetite is varied.
