Thane Municipal Engineers Overburdened with Work, Health Issues on the Rise.

Due to extreme workload, engineers from Thane Municipal Corporation’s construction department are facing severe stress, with one engineer recently suffering a heart attack and another being treated after a brain stroke. The situation has raised concerns about staff health and work conditions. Currently, 300 engineering positions are sanctioned in the civic body, but only 132 are filled—meaning nearly 170 posts remain vacant. Just 9 executive engineers are managing work meant for 21, while 12 assistant engineers are handling tasks meant for 38. Junior engineers are especially overworked, with only 66 of the required 146 positions filled. Despite rapid urban development, essential departments like city engineering and planning remain understaffed. These engineers are responsible for key infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, and public utilities—work that demands both mental and physical resilience. Officials say without filling vacancies soon, both the quality of projects and the well-being of engineers will continue to suffer.
