Thane Garbage Crisis: Residents Warned to Pay for Waste Mismanagement

Thane city is struggling with its mounting garbage problem. The municipal corporation has accused housing societies of failing to properly segregate waste, creating dangerous piles of mixed garbage in open spaces. Over 700 societies and institutions are under the scanner. Despite repeated reminders, civic officials say most residents have not set up proper systems for wet and dry waste separation. Now, the corporation has issued a tough warning—it will recover the costs of waste management directly from residents’ pockets. Citizens are angry, saying they already pay heavy property taxes and expect the civic body to handle waste responsibly. Authorities, however, argue that segregation at source is the only way to solve the crisis. If residents do not follow rules, penalties and added charges will be unavoidable. For now, societies have been given one last chance to start segregation. The message from the civic body is clear: clean up at home, or pay up.
