Navratri Celebrations Begin with Grandeur in Thane
Over 3,800 Durga idols to be installed; city lights up with Garba and Dandiya events.
With the start of Navratri from Ghatasthapana today, Thane city is fully geared up for the grand celebrations. According to Thane Police Commissionerate records, this year around 3,862 Durga idols will be installed — 608 public and 3,254 household. In addition, nearly 7,532 ghats (sacred pots) will also be established for worship.
On Sunday, the arrival of idols at various major pandals was marked with pomp and enthusiasm. Processions were held to welcome the deities, especially those considered prestigious or associated with vows (navas).
The Navratri festivities this year also come against the backdrop of upcoming municipal and civic elections. To draw crowds, large-scale Garba and Dandiya events have been organized across Thane. The entire city, along with nearby areas, has been decorated with bright lights, giving a festive look.
Navratri has been celebrated with grandeur for years at Thane’s Tembhi Naka and Kalyan’s Durgadi Fort. This time too, cities including Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli, Bhiwandi, and Ulhasnagar are witnessing vibrant festivities.
In total, 133 public and 287 household venues will hold worship of the goddess’s image with Garba and devotional activities continuing for nine days.
