Mumbai Indians take on Gujarat Giants in the Western Derby

On Tuesday at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, it is time for the Western Derby as Mumbai Indians take on Gujarat Giants. The two-time winners and defending champions, Mumbai Indians, have been inconsistent in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 so far, opening with a loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru before bouncing back with a win over Delhi Capitals. Gujarat Giants, on the other hand, have hit the ground running. The Ashleigh Gardner-led side has won both of their opening matches, first defeating UP Warriorz and then outclassing three-time finalists Delhi Capitals.

One common thread for both teams has been the impact of their overseas all-rounders. For Mumbai Indians, it has been England’s Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Australia’s Nicola Carey, who stamped their authority with both bat and ball against the Capitals. For Gujarat Giants, Australia’s Georgia Wareham and New Zealand’s Sophie Devine have impressed consistently.

India’s home-grown talent has also been making waves. Mumbai Indians’ captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, stole the show against Delhi Capitals, while Gujarat Giants’ Renuka Singh Thakur and Rajeshwari Gayakwad have delivered crucial performances.

In her debut WPL season, Giants’ batter Anushka Sharma has grabbed headlines with a stellar start to her franchise career. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s teenage sensation, Gunalan Kamalini, has already showcased glimpses of brilliance both in front of and behind the stumps.

Despite these similarities, one stark difference between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants lies in their opening partnerships. Mumbai Indians, in the absence of Hayley Matthews, have struggled to get going inside the powerplay, whereas Gujarat Giants have enjoyed strong starts, thanks to power-hitters Devine and Beth Mooney.

Just as Mumbai Indians struggled against the left-hand–right-hand combination of Smriti Mandhana and Grace Harris in the powerplay against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they now face a similar challenge against Giants’ Devine and Mooney. The task is clear for Shabnim Ismail and her bowling colleagues: pick up early wickets and seize control of the game. On paper, Giants appear top-heavy with Mooney, Devine, and Gardner. But with the likes of Sharma, Kanika Ahuja, and Bharti Fulmali in the middle order, the team has depth. But if their overseas stars falter, the batting line-up could find itself under pressure.

For Mumbai Indians, apart from resolving their opening woes, the over-reliance on captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Sciver-Brunt could prove risky if either has an off day. Giants’ bowlers will look to exploit this and make early inroads.

The Western Derby promises to be a thrilling contest. Will Gujarat Giants register a hat-trick of wins in WPL 2026, or will Mumbai Indians put the brakes on their winning streak?
