History Repeats or History Rewritten? England vs South Africa, Yet Again!
England, South Africa, and ICC semi-finals have become as common as traffic jams in Mumbai. Over the years, these two sides have turned the knockout stage into their annual meeting point, having clashed in the 2017 and 2022 ODI World Cup semi-finals, and the 2023 and 2024 T20 World Cup semi-finals. Now, for the fourth straight year, they are set to lock horns once again, this time in the semi-final of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in Guwahati.
Looking back at their recent duels, England triumphed in the even years (2022 and 2024), while South Africa had their moment in the odd one (2023). With yet another odd-year semi-final lined up on Wednesday, can the Proteas tilt the odds in their favour?
For South Africa, however, Guwahati has not been a happy hunting ground. The only time they played here earlier in this World Cup, they were bundled out for a paltry 69 against none other than England. That 10-wicket drubbing could have shattered many sides, but Laura Wolvaardt and her team bounced back impressively, stringing together five consecutive wins to storm into the semi-final.
As Guwahati gears up for another high-voltage clash, the question remains, are the wounds of that crushing defeat still fresh in South Africa’s camp, or are they ready for payback? The task is cut out for Wolvaardt and company. To make their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup final, they will have to pull a rabbit out of the hat and finally conquer their long-time nemesis.
All eyes will naturally be on skipper and opener Laura Wolvaardt, the team’s leading run-scorer in this tournament, who has two fifties in her last three outings. Back in 2017, it was her composed 66 that helped South Africa post a competitive 218, only for England to snatch victory in the very last over by two wickets.
Alongside Wolvaardt, the experienced trio of Sune Luus, Marizanne Kapp, and Chloe Tryon, veterans of the 2017 and 2022 semi-finals, will be desperate to turn memories of heartbreak into history.
For England, Sophie Ecclestone will once again be the player to watch. The tall left-arm spinner dismantled South Africa’s batting in the 2022 semi-final with a remarkable six-wicket haul. The world No. 1 ODI bowler will be raring to once again ‘shoulder’ the responsibility, though a recent injury in the match against New Zealand could test her fitness and resolve.
With captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and former skipper Heather Knight anchoring the batting, England look as formidable as ever. Sciver-Brunt’s consistency and Knight’s experience, the latter having led England to the 2017 World Cup title, make the four-time champions a well-balanced outfit.
While the cricketing world braces for another England–South Africa semi-final, there’s one old foe neither team can control, the rain. With forecasts predicting a 25% chance of showers in the afternoon and up to 55% in the evening, the toss could prove crucial. Captains might prefer bowling first, mindful of the DLS method possibly coming into play.
Of the four matches played in this World Cup at Guwahati, teams batting first have won two. Interestingly, England have chased successfully on both occasions they have played here. The dilemma for both captains will be whether to trust their chasers or put runs on the board in this high-pressure showdown.
For years, South Africa’s story at World Cups has been one of promise, heartbreak, and near-misses. England have been the roadblock too often, the unmovable hurdle on the path to glory. But sport, as history reminds us, is full of poetic twists. On Wednesday, under Guwahati’s uncertain skies, South Africa will once again stare down their old rivals, not as underdogs burdened by the past, but as contenders hungry to script history.
