Do-or-Die for MI; RCB eye direct entry into the final

Defending champions Mumbai Indians find themselves walking a tightrope in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 as they face Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Tuesday. Two-time winners and one of the most consistent sides in the league’s short history, Mumbai are uncharacteristically under pressure. With just two wins from six matches, there is no room for error now. Both their remaining fixtures (against RCB today and Gujarat Giants in their final league outing) are must-win encounters if they are to keep their playoff hopes alive.

While Mumbai have already beaten Gujarat Giants earlier in the tournament, they suffered a heartbreaking loss to RCB in the season opener.

The WPL 2026 began with a blockbuster MI–RCB clash at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, and it delivered drama in abundance. In a nail-biting finish, RCB chased down 155 off the final ball of the match. With 18 needed from the last over and three wickets in hand, the contest appeared slightly tilted in Mumbai’s favour. However, with Nadine de Klerk on strike against Natalie Sciver-Brunt, RCB would have backed themselves to go the distance.

Memories of de Klerk’s match-winning innings against India in the league stage of ODI World Cup at Visakhapatnam would have been fresh in the mind of Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur. The South African all-rounder once again drew inspiration from that knock. Despite the over beginning with two dot balls, de Klerk showed remarkable composure and belief. The final four deliveries read like a highlight reel — 6, 4, 6, 4, as RCB sealed a stunning victory and set the tone for their campaign.

Since then, RCB have gone from strength to strength, stringing together four consecutive wins before tasting their first defeat of the season on Saturday, when they were convincingly beaten by three-time finalists Delhi Capitals. With 10 points from six matches, RCB have already secured a place in the playoffs. Yet, this contest remains significant for Smriti Mandhana and her side. A win against Mumbai would guarantee them the top spot on the points table, allowing them a direct entry into the final without the hurdle of the eliminator.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have struggled for rhythm throughout the competition. The injury to Hayley Matthews disrupted their balance early on and forced them to experiment with opening combinations, a move that has clearly not paid dividends. Currently placed fourth, Mumbai trail Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants, with only RCB ahead of all three.

The qualification equation further complicates matters. Gujarat Giants face Delhi and Mumbai in their final two matches, while Delhi’s last league game is against bottom-placed UP Warriorz. UP Warriorz, too, remain in the hunt and could sneak into the playoffs if they manage wins against both RCB and Delhi. For Mumbai, it means that even victories in their remaining matches may not be enough, they will also be hoping that results elsewhere fall in their favour.

However, rather than obsessing over permutations, Mumbai will want to focus on what lies within their control. That starts with beating RCB today and following it up with a win against Gujarat Giants on Friday.

Mumbai’s biggest concern has been their inconsistent batting. Apart from Harmanpreet Kaur, who sits second on the list of leading run-scorers, and Sciver-Brunt, who is fifth, none of the other batters have crossed the 150-run mark this season. The bowling has also lacked penetration, with only Amelia Kerr and Nicola Carey featuring among the top 10 wicket-takers. An over-reliance on the captain and overseas stars has hurt the side, and Mumbai will need stronger contributions from their domestic core. India internationals Amanjot Kaur and Sajeevan Sajana, in particular, will be expected to step up when it matters most.

Given RCB’s form and momentum, beating them will be no easy task. Yet, if there is one team that understands how to rise in adversity, it is Mumbai Indians. With their season on the line, Harmanpreet Kaur and her players must summon one final surge.
