Dispute Over Ward Formation Threatens Sena-BJP Alliance in Thane
BJP alleges bias in ward restructuring; fear of rebellion in Majiwada-Manpada area.
In the upcoming Thane Municipal Corporation elections, the newly proposed ward formation in the Majiwada-Manpada division has sparked tension within the ruling alliance. Local leaders fear that the Shiv Sena and BJP, partners in the MahaYuti, may end up competing against each other, increasing chances of internal rebellion.
The final decision on ward restructuring will be announced next month. The Majiwada-Manpada ward committee includes Wards 1, 2, 3, and 8, covering areas such as Majiwada, Balkum, Manpada, Kolshet, Highland, Kavesar, and Wagbil, along with large housing complexes like Lodha, Hiranandani, Vijay Nagari, Dosti, and Runwal. The region also includes slum pockets like Manpada and Azad Nagar, making it a diverse voter base with educated residents, locals, and migrants.
In the last election, Shiv Sena dominated this committee, winning 14 of 16 seats, while BJP secured only two. BJP leaders now allege that the current restructuring of Wards 2, 3, and 8 favors the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. They have raised objections before the election commission.
With past friction already visible between BJP MLA Sanjay Kelkar and Sena minister Pratap Sarnaik, the dispute over ward formation could further strain the alliance.
