Citizens Unhappy Over MIDC Water Rate Hike in Kalyan.
From September 2025, new water charges to affect households and industries.
The decision of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to increase water rates by ₹1 per unit for residential use and ₹3 per unit for industrial use has sparked dissatisfaction among citizens. The hike will come into effect from 1 September 2025, impacting households and industries across Maharashtra.
Currently, the domestic water rate is ₹8.25 per unit, which will now rise to ₹9.25 per unit. Industrial water charges will go up from ₹22.50 to ₹25.25 per unit. Bulk water supply to municipal corporations will also rise from ₹28.25 to ₹31.25 per unit. The increase is expected to bring MIDC additional revenue worth crores, as the corporation has been facing heavy losses over the past few years.
Officials explained that MIDC spends heavily on the purchase, treatment, and supply of water. While they claim the hike is necessary, citizens argue that this burden will directly affect households already struggling with rising expenses.
Political leaders and local organizations have opposed the hike, calling it unfair. They have warned of protests if the decision is not withdrawn. Shiv Sena leader Raju Patil has announced that the issue will soon be raised through public movements.
