“Shyama” expresses Shamal Matange’s journey from being a quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety management professional to a sustainable fashion advocate.

Shamal founded Shyama in 2019 after working for more than 20 years in the corporate world. She decided to develop a sustainable fashion start-up because of her passion and love for fashion, believing that every woman is unique, and so are their fashion expectations.

The brand name “Shyama” refers to Earth, Yamuna River, and Thinker in Sanskrit. Shamal says, “At Shyama, we thoughtfully handpick and design clothing for people mindful of their impact on the earth. We make ecologically responsible, durable, traditional, and fashionable products.”

Shyama’s handloom sarees and other apparel are made from sustainable and ethically sourced materials, including linen, cotton, and banana fibres. The objective of this start-up is to raise awareness about the need to move to ethically sourced sustainable clothing.

Shamal states, “Saree is my favourite apparel. When I started participating in exhibitions, I realised that many women love sarees but find it difficult to drape them or carry them. So, I thought of making ready-to-wear sarees. At Shyama, we give an option to our customers to provide us with their sarees and convert them into ready-to-wear saree.”
