Points pocketed but problems persist as RCB take on UPW
It will be a classic North–South showdown when UP Warriorz lock horns with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
The two sides have begun their WPL 2026 campaigns on contrasting notes. WPL 2024 winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru kicked off their title defence with a thrilling win over defending champions Mumbai Indians in a humdinger of a contest. UP Warriorz, meanwhile, endured heartbreak in their opening game, going down by a narrow 10-run margin to Gujarat Giants under new captain Meg Lanning.
While RCB have pocketed two valuable points, there are still several areas that demand attention. The absence of Ellyse Perry leaves a sizeable void. Although Nadine de Klerk is expected to shoulder added responsibility, the batting line-up looks far from intimidating. Captain Smriti Mandhana opens alongside Grace Harris, who is more accustomed to finishing roles than setting the tone at the top. Dayalan Hemalatha, batting at No. 3, averages under 18 in the WPL, while Radha Yadav better known for her left-arm spin slots in at No. 5. On paper, it is a batting order that lacks bite.
The bowling attack, too, raises questions. A collection of similar bowlers, including gentle medium pacers in Arundhati Reddy and de Klerk, alongside left-arm spinners Radha Yadav and Linsey Smith does not quite add up to a potent, varied unit. Despite the opening win, RCB may be tempted to tweak their playing XI in search of a more balanced combination.
UP Warriorz have their own issues to iron out. Kiran Navgire’s failure at the top against Gujarat Giants could prompt a rethink. With Phoebe Litchfield and Deandra Dottin available, Lanning might consider a fresh opening partnership. The bowling attack looks strong on paper but could come under pressure if discipline wavers. That said, with world-class spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Deepti Sharma in their ranks, the Warriorz can bank on eight overs of control and wicket-taking threat.
It is still early days in WPL 2026, but with quick turnarounds in the tournament, there is little room for complacency. For Mandhana and Lanning, this clash offers not just a chance to secure points, but an opportunity to smooth out the rough edges before the competition gathers full momentum.
