Thanekars, Recognize the True Value of Your City!

Foreign Investments Signal Bright Future; Call for a ‘Future City’ Initiative.

The reported sale of Viviana Mall to an Abu Dhabi-based company for ₹1,900 crore has sparked widespread discussion in the city. Though there is no official confirmation, neither has the deal been denied. As citizens of Thane, this news should not surprise us. Reliable sources recall that four years ago, Amazon purchased land worth ₹1,800 crore in Balkum, not for housing, but to establish a major IT hub—expected to create nearly one lakh jobs.

Such developments prove Thane’s growing potential. Yet, the city struggles with chronic issues like traffic congestion, dumping grounds, unauthorized constructions, parking chaos, and sanitation. If investors still choose Thane for massive projects, it means they see a prosperous future here. Locals too must shed pessimism and realize their city’s worth.

Experts from diverse fields—urban planning, healthcare, education, business, architecture, and environment—can collaborate to identify challenges and propose solutions. Citizens’ involvement, beyond politics, can strengthen governance. Authorities should even demand city development contributions from large investors, ensuring growth benefits all.

Recently, Telangana announced a ₹30,000 crore ‘Future City’ project. Deputy CM Eknath Shinde could consider piloting a similar initiative for Thane—“Thane Future City (TFC).” With citizen participation, this vision could transform Thane into a model of urban growth.
