Rain Dampens Mood of Idol Makers in Thane
With Navratri just days away, idol makers in Thane are racing against time to complete goddess idols. But the heavy rains have made their task tougher, turning workshops damp and delaying finishing touches.
Usually, the season brings joy and steady work. This year, however, continuous rain has caused cracks in idols, forcing artisans to redo their work. Many say they are unable to dry and paint the idols on time.
Adding to their worries, prices of materials like Plaster of Paris have shot up by nearly 10%. An idol that once cost ₹3,500 is now priced closer to ₹4,000–₹4,500, making it harder for both makers and buyers.
Despite these challenges, the workshops are buzzing. Artists are working late nights, carefully painting eyes, ornaments, and intricate details, determined to deliver idols before the festival begins.
For many, it’s not just business—it’s devotion and tradition they refuse to let the rains wash away.
