Thane Station Expansion: Mega Block Development Stalls Over ₹185 Crore Funding.
The expansion project of Thane railway station, part of the Smart City Mission by the Government of India and Thane Municipal Corporation, is facing delays due to pending funds. The project, started with an estimated cost of ₹263 crore in 2017, has escalated to ₹327 crore.
A new mega block is being developed on a 13.77-acre plot, with railways using 3.77 acres and Thane Municipal Corporation using 10 acres. Out of the total cost, ₹143 crore is being covered by the Thane Municipal Corporation under the Smart City project for facilities like parking, roads, and ramps. The railway ministry has assured ₹185 crore for the project, but the release of these funds is uncertain.
Work on the project began despite the funding for the ₹185 crore not being confirmed. The deadline for handing over the station to railways is December 2025. Delays in funding could impact the project timeline.
