WPL returns to Mumbai after a year hiatus; MI take on GG with the final berth at stake

It is the battle of number two team Gujarat Giants and number three team Mumbai Indians in the final leg of Women’s Premier League 2025 that will be played in Mumbai on Monday. While both the teams have qualified for the play-offs, they still have something to fight for, and that is the place in the final. The team that tops the points table will advance straight to the championship game, while the second and third ranked team will battle it out in the Eliminator. Gujarat Giants play their last league match of the season, whereas Mumbai Indians have one more fixture to go after this. A win here would strengthen Gujarat Giants’ chances of making it to the top of the tree. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians have couple of shots to grab the numero uno position.

Players to watch out

Natalie Sciver-Brunt: She is the Ms Dependable of Mumbai Indians. Having scored 309 runs in six outings, this English all-rounder is the second highest run getter in WPL 2025. She also has eight wickets in six innings, making her a genuine match winner.

Amelia Kerr: The star player from New Zealand is the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians in this season of WPL with 10 wickets in six matches. The leg spinner, who can bowl bamboozling googlies is just one wicket away from becoming the overall highest wicket-taker of WPL 2025. Though she hasn’t had to do much with the bat, she can be more than handy with the willow. She can be a floater, and can bat in the middle order or even open, case in point, her previous match, when she started the proceedings with the bat.

Ashleigh Gardner: After forgetful outings in the first two seasons of WPL, the new captain of Gujarat Giants has led her side to the play-offs for the first time in three seasons. The Australian has been impressive with both bat and ball. She is the top scorer for her side in this WPL with 235 runs in seven matches. The off spinner has also snapped seven wickets in as many encounters. In four wins, she has bagged the POTM twice.

Harleen Deol: The top order batter of Gujarat Giants had a fantastic game against table toppers Delhi Capitals in her previous match. She led the run chase of 178 from the front, muscling 70 not out from just 49 balls, smashing nine fours and a six. The Indian right-hander came in to bat in the third over and carried her team across the finishing line with finesse.
