Vishwanathan Anand in Thane!

For the first time in Thane on the 77th Independence Day, chess enthusiasts were treated to a remarkable spectacle of intellect and skill as Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand was challenged to simultaneously play with 22 talented players at Korum Mall.

Rotary Club Thane Midtown and Upstep Academy organised the grand event, which proved to be an extraordinary demonstration of the chess game’s strategy and analytical aspects. The proceedings started at 2 p.m. and continued until almost 4 p.m. Anand showcased his exceptional skills and engaged with the young players in an immersive chess experience. The participants exhibited their passion for the game, each building on their distinct strategy to win it. However, the former five-time World Chess Champion was too hot to handle. Anand won all 22 games.

Chess is a timeless and strategic sport and a treasure trove for nurturing analytical thinking and strategic acumen. Its magic lies in shaping creativity, discipline and the ethos of sportsmanship.

A day after chess legend Viswanathan Anand played simultaneously with 22 participants at an event in Thane, chief minister Eknath Shinde said he and his associates are also called “grandmasters of politics” after their rebellion last year.

“Just like Viswanathan Anand played the game of chess simultaneously with 22 players, we are also surrounded by opponents and are involved in playing the game of politics. Just as you have rooks, bishops and knights, I am also surrounded by opponents trying to checkmate me,” said the chief minister.
