Vegetable prices soar giving a hard time to consumers

Shortage of vegetables and food supplies in Thane and suburban markets has led to a sharp rise in prices. In the wholesale market, prices of almost all vegetables have gone up by Rs 2 to Rs 10, while in the retail market, vegetables have gone up by Rs 5 to Rs 30.
Due to the spread of infection, in the last few months, the number of vehicles coming to the APMC (Agricultural Produce market committee) premises in Vashi had been capped. This led to a drastic fall in the arrivals of veggies.
Moreover, due to the month of Shravan, the demand for vegetables was high which also led to a sharp rise in prices. However, over the last few days, the limit on the number of vehicles in the premises of the Vashi Agricultural Produce Market Committee has been lifted. Therefore, the market has started at full capacity. But the rains in the last week have affected the vegetable crop in Pune and Nashik belts leading to decline of vegetable arrivals and spike in prices.
According to traders, the arrival of vegetables in Mumbai-Thane has declined by 20 per cent.
