UNPUTDOWNABLE!

Dr. Suhas Kulkarni

After the success of ‘Incognito’, a psychological thriller, we were eagerly waiting to lap up the next novel by Lata Gwalani. And “Prisoners of Secrets” is finally here!

An unusual love story that spans three generations, it is set in South India in the 1950s. The period, its people (the conservative Tamil Brahmin mindset is beautifully captured), the landscape are all brilliantly described, giving the reader an amazing insight.

Lata has a knack of giving life not only to her characters which have endearing flaws, but also trees and inanimate objects and abstract ideas. Even time is not spared. Sample this: “when Manuel walks into the class, time freezes at the door, reluctant to intrude.”

The protagonists have dark secrets, which the reader is privy to. But the raging dilemmas in their minds are superbly described, and one’s heart aches for the characters, with all their flaws!

A must read book if you enjoy fiction with an unusual story line. It is a perfect prescription for a quiet weekend. Curl up in your favourite recliner, pick up a steaming hot cuppa and switch off the phone and doorbell.

I am sure you will find it “unputdownable”!!
