TMC Fined ₹90.2 Crores for Creek Pollution Due to Waste Dumping.
Seven years of illegal dumping damages environment and marine life in Diva area.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has fined Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) ₹90.2 crores for dumping untreated waste at Diva’s dumping ground between 2016 and 2023. This caused severe damage to the nearby creek’s marine life, local biodiversity, water pollution, and affected public health.
Over 1,000 tonnes of waste from Diva and Kalwa were dumped daily without proper treatment, polluting the environment. MPCB had issued warnings earlier, but TMC failed to act.
In April 2024, TMC submitted data showing partial compliance, but it was insufficient. Hence, on April 30, 2025, MPCB sent a final notice to pay the full penalty.
Environmental groups like Vanarai Foundation have highlighted the impact. The case shows serious negligence in waste management and environmental protection.
