Due to covid induced lockdowns, the third creek bridge connecting Thane and Kalwa will be delayed. As materials required for the construction of the bridge could not reach during lockdown period and many workers fled to their native villages, the bridge work was stalled for six months.
There are two creeks connecting Thane and Kalwa. One of them was extremely old, built during the British-era. Few years ago, with a fear of mishap it was closed for traffic. Since then, the vehicles are plying by the second creek bridge.
Due to rapid urbanization in the last few years, the load of vehicles on this bridge has augmented. To reduce its burden, Thane Municipal Corporation started the construction of the third creek bridge a few years ago.
Work on the bridge was expected to be completed in December 2019; but due to various permissions and some technical reasons, the work could not be completed. After that, in this year’s TMC’s budget, it was said that the bridge would be completed by December 2020. For this, the speed of bridge work was also increased.
The lockout was imposed in March due to an increase in the prevalence of corona. Also, many workers fled to their hometowns for fear of Corona. This created a shortage of workers for the bridge work. Iron materials for bridge work ordered from Gujarat and Daman could not reach the city due to lockdown.
As a result, bridge work has slowed down in the past six months.
