“Oral health: A window to overall health”

Like father, like son, Dr. Makarand Deshpande has carried his father, Dr. Veejay Deshpande’s dental legacy forward. Seeking inspiration from his father, the Deshpande scion chose dentistry as his profession at a very young age. Dr. Makarand reminisces, “I could explain a dental procedure to my school principal. I was just 11 years old back then and she was surprised with the kind of understanding I had about the subject.”

There are close to a dozen specializations in dentistry. Dr Makarand specializes in Prosthodontics, which, in simple terms can be understood as an extension of dental implantology, a field in which his father, Dr. Veejay Deshpandey, is a pioneer and is a well established name. Dr. Makarand has a masters’ degree, having secured second rank in the post doctoral examinations.

He says, “Prosthodontics includes replacement of missing natural teeth, rehabilitation of mutilated natural dentitions and associated structures to restore normal function and to improve appearance.” He adds “ As always with all streams of medicine/dentistry early diagnosis is essential to better prognosis as corrective treatment can be started at a very incipient stage to nip the problem in the bud.”

Dr. Makarand joined Creative Smiles a decade ago. At Creative Smiles, there is complete digitalization in prosthodontics, which means, in-office making of the artificial teeth, like crowns, bridges, veneers, implant restorations and even removable dentures. The state of art CAD CAM technology(CEREC) enables us to create beautiful natural looking smiles that function with great ease and comfort for our patients.Around four years ago, Creative Smiles was the first dental clinic in Thane to start CEREC one visit dental treatment solutions.

Oral cancer is very common due to extensive consumption of tobacco and related products. Dr. Makarand mentions, “We had a patient, who was suffering from oral cancer. In his situation, a section of his mouth and jaw were resected. Restoration and replacement was going to be very challenging as the anatomy and physiology was dysfunctional. He was not able to eat and even talk properly. A maxillofacial palatal obturators was made for him and we were able to solve his problem and today he can eat, drink and talk comfortably.”

Dr. Makarand adds, “Today due to our hectic lifestyles, stress induced tooth wear related problems are on a rise, it leads loss of enamel(outermost hard layer of the tooth) and exposure of dentin(internal soft layer of the tooth), making the tooth susceptible to decay and further damage. Such teeth are usually broken, chipped, discolored and unpleasant in appearance. Increased sensitivity, pain and difficulty while chewing are synonymous with severely worn dentition. Dental treatment required for such patients is usually restorative in nature owing to compromised tooth structure. We are able to help these patients with minimal number of sessions as the entire process is done in-office and at times can even be completed in a single visit!

Dentistry has evolved over the years. Earlier if there was a tooth ache people would just get the tooth extracted but now they want to save it. So here the role of an endodontist or a root canal specialist comes into play. At Creative Smiles, Dr. Sharmika Deshpande handles the endodontics wing since 9 years.

Rubbing shoulders with her husband is Dr. Sharmika Deshpande. The husband-wife duo work well in tandem. Drawing parallels with the construction industry, it can be said that Dr. Sharmika lays the foundation, while Dr. Makarand builds the structure above.

Dr. Sharmika has a master’s degree in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, and has various certifications to her credit, namely Cosmetic Dentistry and Microendodontics. But her main forte lies in tooth related pain management across all age groups.

‘Will my tooth pain!? ‘ is the most common question asked when it comes to Root canals she exclaims! Modern endodontics with the use of precise equipment has made root canal treatment nearly pain-free! It’s important to understand that earlier the infective element is overcome, less painful the treatment.Patients are generally scared of the dentist and wait untill their teeth get painful.Earlier symptoms like sensitivity to temperature or food lodgement should not be ignored. These earlier signs may be solved by only a filling or restoration, if you wait for a tooth to pain the infection has already reached the Root canal. She adds an important message ‘Catch them young!’ get your cavities filled now to avoid a Root canal treatment tomorrow!Nonetheless, by using her most gentle and patient friendly ways she relieves tooth pain most efficiently.

She states, “It is important for people not to ignore oral diseases, as they can lead to heart ailments! In severe conditions the bacteria which cause gum disease can traverse through the blood vessels to the heart, causing certain heart diseases. Oral health determines one’s overall health, its considered a mirror of your internal systemic health, including digestion, hormonal imbalance etc.”

Dr. Sharmika adds, “Dental check-ups have become all the more important because of our changing lifestyles. Junk food and consumption of refined sugar food items have become a part of our modern day lifestyle. Snacking in between meals is another cause of concern and one of the main reasons of tooth decay. It is imperative to rinse thoroughly after we consume anything. Other than brushing twice daily, interdental cleaning with a dental floss and using a mouthwash will improve your oral hygiene significantly. With regular dental check ups early signs of tooth decay and other oral ailments can be identified and treated in time thus avoiding more extensive treatment therapies. Dental treatments are not expensive but neglect is!

The husband-wife duo signed off by offering a message to all, “It is important to have a family dentist. Dental problems are not hereditary, however, habits are. Therefore, it is essential to inculcate good oral hygiene habits among the children right from the start. Also just like people undertake blood tests for routine health check-ups every 6 months, dental check-ups should also form a part of their routine going ahead.”

Dr. Veejay Deshpande, his daughter Dr. Preeti Kulkarni, his son Dr. Makarand Deshpande and daughter-in-law Dr. Sharmika Deshpande, have been the four strong pillars of Creative Smiles. Running into its second generation, the experienced and highly qualified dentists, together cover A to Z of dentistry. Creative Smiles is a one stop dental solution, with top notch facilities, modern technology, helpful staff and ofcourse a team of expert dentists.
