ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023: Will rain spill water on New Zealand’s semi-final hopes?

It was not too long ago that New Zealand was almost a certainty to play the semi-final. However, the way last 20 days have panned out for the Kiwis, they find themselves in a spot of bother. They started their World Cup campaign on a positive note winning their first four matches, however they suffered defeats in their next four. The finalists of the last edition of the World Cup will take on Sri Lanka in the last league match on November 9 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. In a ‘must win’ situation, New Zealand have a tough challenge in front of them as they have ended up on the losing side on three occasions when the two teams have played in India. Besides, rain forecast during the match day would have been the last thing that New Zealand would have wanted.

Head-to-Head

New Zealand and Sri Lanka have played 101 ODIs against each other since 1979, of which New Zealand have won 51, Sri Lanka have won 41, one match ended in a tie, and eight matches did not produce results. In India, they have played three ODIs and Sri Lanka have won all of them. At the World Cups, they have played 11 matches, with New Zealand winning five and Sri Lanka winning six.
