Mumbai, Gujarat Fight to Keep Playoff Dreams Alive

As the floodlights come on at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Friday, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 league stage edges closer to its climax, with Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians set to clash in a virtual knockout. With a coveted playoff spot hanging in the balance, the stakes could hardly be higher in this penultimate league match.

Gujarat currently sit second on the points table with eight points from seven matches, having won four. Mumbai, close on their heels, are third with six points from the same number of games. The equation is straightforward for Gujarat: a win will seal their place in the playoffs. A defeat, however, could leave them vulnerable. Should Mumbai level them on eight points, the defending champions’ superior net run rate would propel them above Gujarat in the standings.

Adding further intrigue to the scenario are Delhi Capitals, who also have six points and a healthier net run rate than Gujarat. Delhi play their final league match against UP Warriorz on Sunday, keeping the qualification race wide open. For Gujarat, therefore, the simplest way to avoid the net run rate maze is to beat Mumbai and book their ticket to the playoffs outright. Mumbai, on the other hand, know that a victory on Friday would take them through regardless of the outcome of the Delhi–UP fixture, thanks to their commanding net run rate.

Mumbai Indians will enter the contest brimming with confidence, having not lost to Gujarat Giants in their last five encounters. They will be keen to extend that dominance to six in a row. When the two sides last met, on January 13 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, fans were treated to a high-scoring thriller. Nearly 400 runs were piled on as Mumbai chased down a daunting target of 193 with four balls to spare and seven wickets in hand. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur led from the front with a sensational unbeaten 71 off just 43 deliveries, and Mumbai will once again look to her to rise to the occasion.

Harmanpreet is not the only one in form. England captain Natalie Sciver-Brunt comes into this game on the back of a magnificent century, which was the first of WPL, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and will be eager to continue her rich vein of form. Support from the likes of Amelia Kerr, Hayley Matthews and Shabnim Ismail will be crucial if the two-time champions are to keep their title defence alive.

Gujarat Giants, meanwhile, will draw confidence from their recent resurgence. They head into this match on the back of two consecutive victories, both powered by outstanding bowling performances. Sophie Devine and Rajeshwari Gayakwad have been particularly impressive, with Devine also making a telling impact with the bat. While Gujarat may have punched above their weight at times this season, they will need their captain Ashleigh Gardner to produce a defining performance in what is arguably their most important match of the campaign.

With Royal Challengers Bengaluru already through, Friday’s showdown could well determine the second team to secure a playoff berth. Expect intensity, drama and no shortage of nerves as Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians battle to keep their WPL 2026 dreams alive.
