Man of ‘Metal’
It all started in 2014 when Rahul Sawant was studying at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. He was in the Metalwork department. From the first year, Rahul sat and discussed with his seniors to learn more about metalwork. He started collecting scrap metal and experimented with them to make keychains, pendants, etc. His keychains and pendants were well-received by his friends, and soon they began placing orders for the same with him. Rahul also exhibited his work in a stall during the annual art show of the college in March 2016.
Rahul used to design and make things modernly, taking inspiration from the designs and shapes of ancient times, using copper (Tamra) and brass (Kasya). His designs were, therefore, different. Tamra-Kasya was thus born.
At the start, only six product designs were kept for sale. Still, he got an excellent response. His confidence was sky-high. Capitalising on it, he started participating in exhibitions to reach out to a larger target audience.
In 2018, Rahul launched his website for Tamra-Kasya. The sunflower earring was made in the same year, which is the most sought-after product to date.
Over the years, Rahul has introduced different designs, including Karma earrings, Tamra Pankham, Tamra Parnam, Rope Ring Stud, Tribal Stud, Chandbali, Greek, and Indo-Greek designs. Along with Riya Jadhav and Ajay Mhamune, the core members of Rahul’s team, Tamra-Kasya aims to scale greater heights.
While making jewellery, Rahul used to look at how attractive the design was to people rather than how beautiful the design was. He believes their personalities should shine through when your customers wear your collection. If jewellery succeeds in attracting people’s attention, then Rahul considers that hard work to be a success. Not just India, people from abroad have started showing interest in Tamra-Kasya products.
