Jupiter Hospital performs third successful heart transplant in past 6 months

43-year-old Nasreen Raut underwent a heart transplant surgery at Jupiter Hospital, Thane. Resident of Khopoli, Maharashtra, Nasreen’s husband is an autorickshawdriver and they have three children. Their life came to a standstill when her problem of increasing breathlessness and palpitations turned out to be heart failure. Doctors told her she was suffering from a condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) where the muscular wall of the heart was breaking down over time, leading to abnormal heartbeat.

Jupiter Heart failure team Dr. Nitin Burkule & Dr. Gautam Rege evaluated her for need of heart transplant and her likeliness to benefit from it. She had a successful heart transplant on 26th March by the Heart Transplant team comprising of surgeons Dr. Pravin Kulkarni and Dr. Saumya Sekhar, anaesthetist Dr. Shailesh Kamkhedkar &physician assistantJohn Thomas.

Since the cost of the surgery and treatment was not affordable for the family, Jupiter Hospital’s transplant team coordinated with Tata Trust and Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Fund to help them financially.

“While she has recovered completely, her family will have to take very good care of infection-control back home. Our team has guided and trained the family on home management with the necessary precautions to be taken post her discharge”, Dr. Pravin Kulkarni concluded. Nasreen had a quick recovery in the ICU and wards, and is now ready for a new innings with a new heart.

Speaking about the surgery, Dr. Pravin Kulkarni, heart and lung transplant surgeon at Jupiter Hospital said, “We thank the donor family for their kindness because of which the patient got a second chance at life. We are also grateful to the donors and CM’s relief fund whose timely donation help us save her life”.
