Jupiter becomes the 1st hospital in Thane district to perform a hand transplant

Early this month, Jupiter Hospital announced the opening of its new department that will perform hand transplants. This department will provide a promising and transformative solution for patients suffering from severe hand injuries and limb loss. It is a historic achievement for the hospital as it becomes the first in the Thane district to have the said department.

Jupiter Hospital has put together a team of renowned surgeons, transplant specialists, rehab specialists and multi-disciplinary specialists with expertise in hand transplantation. This team is led by Dr Venkateswaran, who was part of the team that performed the first-hand transplant last year at a leading government hospital in Mumbai. Reputed plastic surgeon and co-director of Jupiter Wound Care Clinic, Dr Venkateswaran, has extensive experience and expertise in complex reconstructive surgeries. He is also the Co-Chairman of the Hand Transplant Committee-Rotto.

Highlighting the need for more hospitals to perform hand transplants, Dr Venkateswaran says, “The number of amputees in India is significant, with estimates of more than half a million people living with a missing limb. Additionally, the population of such disabled people in India is increasing yearly, with thousands of new cases being added. Various factors can cause this, including accidents, injuries, congenital conditions, and illnesses.”

Jupiter Hospital has been successfully running adult and pediatric (pediatric) transplant programmes in the city, with more than 600 transplants done to date. It is the only centre in Thane district to perform heart, liver, kidney, bone marrow and cornea transplants. The launch of this specialised hand transplant department will further strengthen Jupiter Hospitals’ leadership in the field of cutting-edge medical procedures.
