Jaiswal’s double ton, Bumrah’s 6-for sum up India’s successful Day 2 in the England Test
India are in a commanding position in the second Test having taken a healthy lead of 171 runs at the end of Day 2 at Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
Starting the day’s proceedings at 336/6, India added another 60 runs before getting bowled out. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was unbeaten on 179 at the end of Day 1, went on to score his much-deserved double-century. The Mumbai batter registered 209 runs off 290 balls, including 19 fours and seven sixes. The ageless English fast bowler James Anderson (3/47) finally dismissed Jaiswal in the 107th over of the innings.
With plenty of runs to play with, the Indian bowlers did their job when it was time for them to shine. Jasprit Bumrah, who needs 10 wickets to complete 150 Test wickets, was the pick of the bowlers, as he snapped 6/45 in 15.5 overs. Bumrah received good support from Kuldeep Yadav (3/71) and Axar Patel (1/24) as the trio bundled out England for 253 in 55.5 overs. England’s opening batter, Zak Crawley (76), was the lone half-centurion in the innings, with captain Ben Stokes (47) being the second-highest run-scorer.
Having their nose ahead with a lead of 143 runs, India’s opening pair of captain Rohit Sharma (13*) and Jaiswal (15*), who batted for the second time in the day, plundered 28 runs in the last five overs of the day’s play. Of the three bowlers used by the visitors in the form of Anderson and spinners Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed, the Indian batters took a particular liking towards the debutant Bashir as they attacked him by scoring 17 runs from his two overs.
