Is veganism the best choice?
Dr. Vaishnavi Karve shares her experience of turning vegan on World Vegan Day that is celebrated on November 1.
Becoming a vegan is about changing any consumption practices that affect animals. By rejecting items derived from animals, veganism promotes a more caring world and seeks to minimise the suffering of animals. As a result, for a person to turn vegan, it might be a conscious decision to alter their food preferences and lifestyle patterns.
On the eve of World Vegan Day, celebrated on November 1, KYT spoke to Dr. Vaishnavi Karve, who has accepted veganism as the way of life. A dentist by profession, Dr. Vaishnavi shared her experience of turning vegan. She has been a huge animal lover since childhood and has grown up watching Animal Planet. She has a pet dog at home.
Since she was a vegetarian, accepting veganism was not that difficult for her. But finding dairy substitutes was a challenge. She avers, “Today, we have many different options that make life relatively simple, such as the online vegan supermarket Greend, which solely sells vegan products. However, it is challenging to find vegan-friendly cafes in Thane.” Taking her veganism to a different level, she also shops cautiously to avoid purchasing anything made of leather.
Dr. Vaishnavi says, “Accepting veganism was the best choice she has made because it benefits animals and her. I have seen remarkable changes concerning my skin and digestive system.” If necessary, she takes plant-based supplements since eliminating dairy products from the diet devoids the human body of vital nutrients like Vitamin B12, D3, Omega, etc.
She stressed that it may take time for people to realise how critical animal life is to our environment but that all will work out for the best since, as they say, “Slow and Steady Wins the Race.”
