Insightful Journey of Ram Mandir Construction

The Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID) hosted a significant event titled “The Making of History – Unraveling of Iconic Ram Mandir” at Supreme Banquets, Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagruha. The keynote speaker, Architect Ashish Sompura, the architect behind Ayodhya’s prestigious Ram Mandir, shared insights into the construction process of this Mandir. Rashmi Tiwari, Chairperson of IIID TRC, shared with KYT that the event was organised to uncover the technicalities, structure and efforts behind the Ram Mandir‘s building process. Nikhil Sule, Hon. Secretary of IIID, stated that the Ram Mandir symbolises India’s cultural heritage and struggle, and that honouring its significance would have brought immense pressure on this architect.

Ashish Sompura, a third-generation architect, has followed the legacy of his grandfather, Prabhashankar Sompura, designer of the renowned Somnath Mandir. The Sompura family has a storied history of designing prominent temples, making the Ram Mandir project, which bore national aspirations, both a professional and familial duty for Ashish Sompura.

In his speech, Sompura highlighted the unique challenges faced during the Ram Mandir‘s construction, especially the avoidance of using steel. This was achieved through extensive research and innovation, resulting in a structure made entirely of Indian stone and concrete, projected to last over 2,500 years.

Currently in its first phase, the temple draws approximately 3 lakh pilgrims daily, with infrastructure developments expected to accommodate 10-11 lakh visitors per day by December 2025. Sompura’s work on the Ram Mandir continues his family’s historical legacy in temple architecture, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern ingenuity.

Associated with the 52-year-old pan-India organisation, the Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID), Thane was established 12 years ago, given to the city’s significant potential for interior development. With over 32 chapters nationwide, each chapter is claimed to be unique, inviting special guests to ensure audiences gain valuable insights from every event.
