ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023: Will the five-time world champions Australia show the exit door to the title defenders England?

Australia may have lost their first two matches of this World Cup, however the five-time world champions switched on their beast mode as they secured wins in their next four matches. England, on the other hand, have not seemed to have turned up for the mega event to defend their title. Registering just a solitary win in six matches, the defending champions are miserably sitting at the bottom of the points table. Can England somehow manage to find a win and stop the powerful Aussies? The chances are bleak, but anything is possible in cricket.

The 36th match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will take place between Australia and England at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 4.

Head-to-Head

Australia and England have played 155 ODIs against each other between 1971 and 2022, of which Australia have won 87, England have won 63, two matches ended in a tie, and three matches did not produce results. In India, they have played three ODIs, of which Australia have won and England have won one. At the World Cups, of their nine encounters, Australia have won six and England have won three.

Playing conditions

Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the encounter between Australia and England. The venue will host its third match of this tournament. England do not have fond memories of this ground as they have played the World Cup opener against New Zealand and lost by nine wickets. Given the presence of black and red soil pitches, the conditions depend on the type of pitch used. Generally, red soil pitches offer slow and low bounce, making them ideal for spinners. On the other hand, black soil pitches provide even bounce and good for batting.

Weather

The weather is expected to be mostly sunny. The maximum temperature attained during the day will be 35 degrees Celsius. There will be 21% cloud cover. The wind will blow from the east.

Players to watch out for

David Warner: Having scored two centuries in six matches, Australia’s left-handed opening batter is in excellent form. He has muscled 413 runs at an average if 69 and strike rate of 113.

Adam Zampa: The wily leg spinner of Australia has claimed 16 wickets, including three four wick hauls, in six matches. He is the most successful bowler for his side.

Dawid Malan: He is the only English batter to go past 200 runs in this World Cup. The left-handed opener has scored 236 runs in six matches at an average of 39 and strike rate of 106.

Adil Rashid: Of the total 60 wickets, England has been able to pick 39, of which their leg spinner has claimed eight. He has been brave enough to toss the ball and induce the batters to fall prey to his trap.
