Humairaa, Sayali shine in Mumbai’s 5-wicket win over Punjab in Senior Women’s One Day
Mumbai captain Humairaa Kaazi’s half-century and Sayali Satghare’s all-round brilliance helped Mumbai beat Punjab by five wickets in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy at St. Stephen’s Ground in New Delhi on January 8.
Batting first, Punjab posted 211/8 in 50 overs, riding on half-centuries from opening batter Ridhima Aggarwal (69 runs off 85 balls) and middle order batter Parveen Khan (97 not out off 133 balls). However, Punjab could not post a big total as Mumbai bowlers bowled well picking wickets at regular intervals. Satghare was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai as she snapped 3/19 in nine overs, including three maidens. The right arm medium pacer found able allies in Saima Thakor (1/47), Janhvi Kate (1/41), Jagravi Pawar (2/21), and Sanika Chalke (1/20), who chipped in with key wickets.
In reply, Mumbai overhauled the target in 44.3 overs with five wickets in hand and 33 balls to spare. Despite losing their opening batter Chalke (0) on the first ball of the run chase to Komalpreet Kour, Riya Chaudhari (36 runs off 53 balls) and Vrushali Bhagat (23 runs off 40 balls) came together to stitch a 60-run partnership for the second wicket. Mamta Rani broke this partnership in the 13th over as she dismissed Bhagat. Later, coming in at number four, Kaazi, scored a brilliant half-century (56 runs off 61 balls) and received good support from Prakashika Naik (19 runs off 37 balls), Satghare (39 not out off 49 balls), and Khushi Bhatia (26 not out off 26 balls), who made useful contributions with the bat.
Having played three matches so far in the competition, Mumbai have won two and lost one. They play their next match against Bengal on January 10 at Jamia Milia Islamia in New Delhi.
