First heart transplant at Jupiter

39-year-old Bhikaji Nirgun underwent heart transplant surgery at Jupiter Hospital, Thane. A resident of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, Bhikaji, was working with state transport in Kudal when he suffered a massive heart attack. The heart attack led to heart failure, due to which his heart could not pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.
Owing to the complexity of his case and the increasing rate at which his heart was weakening, doctors from his hometown asked him to come to Mumbai for treatment.
Jupiter Cardiology team, led by Dr. Bhaskar Shah and Dr. Nitin Burkule, evaluated him for the need for a heart transplant and his likeliness to benefit from it. “He had suffered massive myocardial infarction due to which his heart function was severely compromised. He came to our hospital in a very critical stage. While we were medically managing his condition in the ICU, he was immediately put on the list of organ recipients in ROTTO Portal after appropriate investigation”, said Dr. Nitin Burkule, Cardiologist at Jupiter Hospital.
He underwent a successful heart transplant on August 24 by the Heart Transplant team led by Dr. Pravin Kulkarni and Dr. Saumya Sekhar at Jupiter Hospital Thane.
Speaking about the surgery, Dr. Pravin Kulkarni, heart and lung transplant surgeon, Jupiter Hospital, said, “Even his short waiting period was extremely difficult for the patient, but our team of cardiologists, immunologists, nutritionists managed his health well and kept him fit for the transplant. We thank the donor family for their kindness. The patient got a second chance at life”.
After close to 30 days in the hospital, Bhikaji regained his strength by following proper nutrition and a physiotherapy regimen. “While he has recovered completely, his family will have to take good care of infection control back home. Our team has guided and trained the family on home management with the necessary precautions to be taken once discharged”, Dr. Pravin Kulkarni concluded.
