Dr. Vivek Karve : Get your Smile back at Dentech
Gone are the days when visiting a dentist was equivalent to loads of pain and stress. Thanks to Dr. Vivek Karve’s Dentech, a dentist’s appointment is no longer a dreadful nightmare but a comfortable experience.
Started way back in the 1980s, Dentech, which is a beautiful amalgamation of dentistry and technology, over the years has become a household name. Dr. Vivek Karve, with a vision to offer experiential dental treatment coupled with state of the art technology and equipment, laid the foundation stone of Dentech in 1987. Over the last 33 years, Dentech has spread its wings across Thane and Mumbai with five clinics and one lab. So, how did it all begin?
Hailing from a typical Maharashtrian family where education is given utmost importance, Dr. Vivek Karve, one among the three siblings, aimed to study hard. “Back in those days, being an engineer or a doctor was considered to be highly educated. Though I had no doctors in my family, I decided to become one, only because I wanted to be highly educated. I was good in academics and after my 12th I got admission into Government Dental College,” avers Dr. Karve.
After completing his BDS, Dr. Karve, who was just around 23 years-old then, started his own practice. My father Mr. Madhusudan Karve had bought the place with a loan against his Provident Fund for me to start a dental practice in Kopri thane east. Being a young doctor, it was initially a challenge to get patients, but gradually, due to my wide social circle and through word of mouth, my clinic gained traction. Studying in the government college helped me a lot when I started practicing since I was used to handling a large number of patients on a daily basis,” he says.
Dr. Karve further adds, “At that time apart from the Kopri clinic, I got the opportunity to run an established clinic in Vartak Nagar. The doctor, who started that clinic, was shifting to Lokhandwala and he wanted someone to take care of his 12-year old setup. Initially I was skeptical whether I would be able to manage both the clinics at such an early stage of career but it was my mother Vijaya who encouraged me to grab the opportunity. It was only because of her that I could dare to take this crucial step. I am glad I took that decision as it was a blessing in disguise for me. With his goodwill, I got a large number of patients right from day one in Vartak Nagar clinic and slowly and steadily my name was established, which helped me eventually in my Kopri clinic.”
While it seems that everything was hunky-dory for Dr. Karve, it was actually not the case. The initial phase when he was just starting out was a challenging one. Suddenly he was thrown into the sea where he had to manage not just one but two clinics at a time. There were some sleepless nights as well. He worked round the clock, juggling between Kopri and Vartak Nagar clinics. Just like any other individual, who is starting out on his own, makes mistakes, Dr. Karve too erred, but he was determined to not repeat the same follies.
“I was very fond of my maternal uncle who started with a now very well established and renowned wedding hall Right from my childhood days, I saw him working hard, multi-tasking and ensuring that there is no stone left unturned while offering the best of services to his clients. In a way it inspired me to replicate his work ethic in my clinics,” exclaims Dr. Karve.
As years passed, Dentech started expanding in Thane as well as in Mumbai, being the only dental clinic in Maharashtra to have multiple branches. After successfully running the Vartak Nagar clinic for eight years, Dr. Karve shut shop, only to start a new clinic in Vasant Vihar in 1995. It was my wife Mekhala who speculated the growth and prospects of the newly developed area -Vasant Vihar. She strongly believed in the potential of this area and urged me to start a branch in this area.
In 2000 and 2001, clinics at Ram Maruti Road and Ghodbunder Road respectively were started. Just over a decade back in 2009, Dr. Karve set his foot on the Mumbai shores as he opened a branch in Powai. “Having a team of well-qualified, skilled and empathetic doctors is quintessential for growth. It is important for the doctors to not only provide effective treatment to patients but also counsel them, take them into confidence and build rapport with them,” explains Dr. Karve.
Apart from catering to individual patients, Dentech boasts of associations with corporate behemoths like Tata Motors and ONGC over the last 10 years. Whether it is a smile design, an implant, a root canal or just whiter teeth, Dentech with its dedicated professionals are always prepared to match the needs of a corporate organization and its valuable employees.
Today, Dentech is Thane and Mumbai’s leading chain of Super Specialty Dental clinics with a team of over 70 highly qualified and trained professionals spread across five flourishing clinics. The well-established set of administrative protocols has been the backbone of Dentech’s success over the last three decades. Each of the clinics is equipped with world-class cutting- edge technology. For instance, the treatments are digitized with Oral Scanners and dental crowns are designed using CAD (computer assisted design) and CAM (computer assisted manufacturing) technology. Patient’s personal details and medical history along with their pictures are digitally stored in its database. “Due to the phobia of injection, many patients would delay the dental treatment, considering this we introduced injection less facility called magic wand computerized tool where patients can avoid the needle. Dentech has also addressed the impressions procedure which is also inconvenient for many. At Dentech, dental impressions are scanned digitally which are comfortable for patients and faster for the dental team to procure highly accurate images. We are the only dental clinic in Maharashtra to have such kind of set up, said Dr. Karve.
Dentech has successfully treated more than four lakh patients. “At dentech our treatments , technology and hygiene are at par with international standards and most importantly with affordable rates,” elucidates Dr. Karve.
Shedding light on his future plans, Dr. Karve, who attributes his success to his family, concludes, “We want to start another clinic in Mumbai, apart from the one that we have in Powai.”
