Expired COVID Medicines Dumped at Waste Plant.
No Processing Done, Raises Concerns Over Plant Operations.
Expired medicines from the COVID period were sent to the Umbarde Biomed Waste Plant by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s health department. These medicines, meant for disposal, were left unprocessed for several days, leading to operational concerns. As per official sources, about 70% of the dumped stock was expired medicines. These were supposed to be processed immediately, but after lying idle for 8 days, they started spreading a foul smell. Authorities revealed that medicines with past expiry dates were sent from the health department’s center store to Umbarde for proper disposal. However, due to poor handling, the process was delayed. This negligence has affected the plant’s operations, and nearby residents are facing issues due to the odor. Officials confirmed that no attempt was made to reuse the expired stock. The matter has now been reported to senior health officials for action.
