2 in 2 for Mumbai in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy

Half centurions Riya Chaudhari (76) and Simran Shaikh (55) along with top wicket-takers Sayali Satghare and Jagravi Pawar, powered Mumbai to their second straight win in Senior Women’s One Day Trophy as they defeated Kerala by 75 runs on Friday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Mumbai piled up a daunting total of 286/7 in 50 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first. The opening pair of captain Humairaa Kaazi (16) and Riya Chaudhari were quickly off the blocks as they put together 24 runs in three overs. After Kaazi’s dismissal, Vrushali Bhagat (28) combined forces with Chaudhari to stitch a 49-run partnership for the second wicket. Then, Simran Shaikh (55) picked up from where she had left in the previous match against Uttarakhand as she smacked another half century. Chaudhari and Shaikh shared a 93-run stand for the third wicket. Besides, there were useful contributions from lower order, with Sayali Satghare (27), wicket-keeper Khushi Bhatia (30), and Manali Dakshini (27 not out) steering the side to a total closer to 300.

For Kerala, S Sajana (2/44) and Shani T (2/37) scalped couple of wickets apiece but that wasn’t enough to keep the power-packed Mumbai batting in check.

In reply, Kerala fought hard but were bowled out for 211 in 45.4 overs. Despite losing their first four wickets inside 16 overs with just 48 runs on board, Akshaya A (74) took the attack to the opposition with her grit and determination. The right-handed middle-order batter top scored for her side but her effort went in vain as she failed to find able allies at the other end. Sayali Satghare (3/35) and Jagravi Pawar (3/43) were impressive with the ball as they shared six wickets between them. Manali Dakshini (2/32) also chipped in with a couple of wickets, including the big one of Akshaya, towards the fag end of the innings.

Mumbai will play their next match against Nagaland on Sunday at Gujarat College Cricket Ground ‘A’ in Ahmedabad.
