South Africa Women’s U19 pip India Women’s U19 (A) by 51 runs
South Africa Women’s U19 handed a crushing 51-run defeat to India Women’s U19 (A) on Tuesday in the lung opener of the Women’s U19 T20 Triangular Series in Pune.
Batting first, South Africa piled up a competitive score of 149/7 in 20 overs, courtesy of skipper Kayla Reyneke’s blitzkrieg. Coming in to bat at number four in the third over when her team was under pressure having lost two wickets for just 18 runs, Reyneke (74 off 48; 4s: 5, 6s: 5) put her head down and bailed her team out. Besides her, Mieke Van Voorst (46 not out off 38) was the only other batter for the visitors to score in double digits. Despite VJ Joshitha’s (3/17) brilliance with the ball, the hosts could not stem the run flow.
In reply, India’s batting collapsed like a pack of cards as they were bowled out cheaply for 98 in 18 overs. India lost half their side for just 28 runs in seven overs. The wrecker-in-chief was the pace sensation, Fay Cowling, who snapped four wickets to break the back of India’s batting. Known more for her bowling than batting, Shabnam Shakil, who earlier in the day had claimed a solitary wicket, top scored with an unbeaten 42 off 24, smashing four fours and two maximums.
