Embrace the Brace
Ever had questions about braces and aligners? Dr. Preeti Kulkarni, an Orthodontist (Braces/Aligner Specialist), has answers to the following FAQs to help you know more!
What is the difference between braces and aligners?
Braces are small metallic or white ceramic parts, fixed on teeth throughout treatment. Monthly adjustment of wires is a part of the braces treatment. To ensure successful treatment and avoid breakage, patients must follow specific food restrictions during the treatment period. Aligners are removable, clear trays worn for about 20 hours a day, offering comfort and invisibility. They are removed while eating, allowing patients to enjoy all foods. Orthodontic treatment options include braces or aligners, based on patient preference.
At what age can a person undergo an Orthodontic treatment with braces/aligners?
Orthodontic treatment is possible at any age, provided the teeth and gums are healthy. An orthodontist’s examination of the patient’s mouth determines the eligibility. Skeletal corrections are best addressed in younger patients, ideally starting at age 7. Many adults seek orthodontic treatments to correct bites, gaps or straighten their teeth. They often prefer invisible and comfortable aligners.
How often does one need to visit the Orthodontist while wearing braces or aligners?
Patients with braces must visit their orthodontist monthly for manual adjustments and wire changes. Aligners, being digitally designed, require visits once every 2-3 months. Patients receive multiple aligner trays in advance, which need to be changed every 10-15 days.
To maintain oral hygiene, how should one care for their braces and aligners?
Oral hygiene is crucial for both braces and aligners. Braces require disciplined brushing twice daily with orthodontic brushes and cleaning around braces after each meal with interdental brushes. Aligners must be removed for regular brushing and flossing. They should be cleaned once daily with special brushes and solutions. Eating and drinking with aligners should be avoided to prevent staining.
Is wearing braces or aligners painful or uncomfortable?
Braces and aligner treatments are not painful. Initial discomfort is common, but patients quickly adjust and find eating with braces or wearing aligners becomes comfortable.
