SmartSight technology by ATOS was used for the first time in Thane at Wavikar Eye Institute, by Dr. C. M. Wavikar. Here are some FAQs Dr. Wavikar answered for KYT –

1. We heard about SmartSight technology by ATOS. Could you explain the technology?
A. ATOS SmartSight technology by Schwind is an advanced technology for refractive surgery. It enables performing a Lenticule-based surgery. This technology can create a disc-shaped piece of tissue using a laser, called a “lenticule”, within the cornea. This lenticule is removed through a small incision, hence reshaping the cornea and improving focus without creating a large flap.

2. From an eye surgeon’s point of view, what is different about using the SmartSight technology?
A. The lenticule extraction surgery generally requires a significant amount of surgeon skill and therefore it is surgeon dependent. With Smartsight, however, the surgeries go more smoothly.

3. The first few surgeries were recently performed using SmartSight technology. Could you elaborate on the surgeon’s experience?
A. The surgeries went on smoothly. For patients, the visual recovery was quite fast, almost equal to that of lasik. Smartsight also uses low amounts of energy as compared to this technology‘s competitors.

4. Could you share the patient’s feedback?
A. Mustaqeem Sayed, a male patient of around age 31 from Kalyan, was one of the firsts to undergo this surgery in Wavikar Eye Institute, Thane. He said, “It did not feel like there was a surgery going on. I kept following the surgeon’s and the Nurses’ instructions while inside the operation theatre. The surgery was over in about 12-15 minutes. I was asked to wait for some time and then, I could go back home, almost immediately. I stayed at home over the weekend and resumed regular work without any problem or irritation. I am very happy that finally I got freedom from my glasses.
