Successfully treat Arthritis at Inspire Physiotherapy Clinic

Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age.Commemorating World Physiotherapy Day, Dr Jayagandha Patil Rathod, the founder of Inspire Physiotherapy Clinic, answers questions about arthritis. Dr Jayagandha is Master’s in Orthopaedic Physiotherapy and has been practising in Thane since 15 years.

What is the difference between Osteoarthritis(OA) and Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)?
Osteoarthritis is the most common degenerative arthritis, primarily due to ageing or wear and tear. It mainly affects a single joint. On the other hand Rheumatoid Arthritis is genetic because the RA factor is found in blood, affecting multiple joints. It starts with small joints of the fingers, wrist, and elbow.

What are the symptoms of arthritis? What are commonly affected joints?
Night pains in affected joints accompanied by swelling and reduced mobility. Daily activities like walking or climbing stairs are hampered in case of knee joint or hip joint being affected. If there are issues with shoulders, elbow and wrist joints, grooming activities like wearing a shirt or combing hair are affected. Further, it can lead to joint deformity.

How has Inspire Physiotherapy Clinic helped in the treatment of arthritis since 2012?
At our rehabilitation setup, our team designs customised treatments and exercise programmes depending on the type and stage of arthritis to reduce pain and stiffness and increase mobility, strength and balance, thereby improving daily living activities. Since inception, we have added advanced physiotherapy interventions like Kinesio Taping, IASTM, Cupping, Dry Needling, and Manual Therapy in combination with traditional therapies like IFT, TENS, US, and Laser modalities to help for cartilage regeneration, healing of injured or damaged soft tissues like ligaments, meniscus or muscles. We encourage the use of braces to prevent further worsening of arthritis, correct deformities and protect joints to improve quality of life.

Can you share a success story of your patient?
I had a 61-year-old patient suffering from shoulder arthritis. He had severe shoulder pains for six months and could not comb his hair or wear a shirt. His night pain was reduced after regular physiotherapy sessions, which included modalities and exercises by our dedicated team of doctors. He could resume his grooming activities. Another case is that of a 65-year-old lady, who complained of knee pain. She was diagnosed with knee arthritis. For almost a year, she could not walk or climb stairs. With Physiotherapy she could resume her daily activities like cooking, going out for shopping, and taking morning walks. We could give her a better lifestyle.

What is your advice to people to prevent arthritis?
At Inspire Physiotherapy Clinic, we have a holistic approach in managing arthritis. For prevention and early cure, we advise patients for postural correction, correct ergonomics, lifestyle modifications like reduce weight and proper diet guidance. Also, regular blood check-ups like Vit. D3, Calcium, Vit. B12, Thyroid, and ESR levels are crucial factors. Early diagnosis and physiotherapy treatments will help patients recover faster, prevent disease progression and have a healthy, pain-free life. So don’t ignore your pain. We are here to help you at our clinic.

Do you conduct any social activities?
We have been arranging many camps and public awareness education programmes for years. I am also the Thane district’s sub-coordinator for the Indian Association of Physiotherapists Women Cell (IAPWC).
