What are the causes of heavy bleeding during periods?
There are a host of reasons that can cause heavy bleeding during periods. They include but are not limited to hormonal imbalance, fibroids in the uterus, Polycystic Ovaries, thyroid disorders, consumption of medicines to prevent blood clots, some infections, fluctuations in the weight and stress. Usually, the cause can be detected with examination, blood tests and sonography, however a few times there may be no obvious cause found responsible for the heavy bleeding, yet it can be treated successfully.
When should a woman suffering from the problem of heavy bleeding during periods visit the doctor?
A woman should be aware of the difference between regular and excessive periods. If she finds herself needing to change tampons or pads every hour due to heavy bleeding, passing large blood clots, or feeling excessively tired, weak, or dizzy, it might be time to seek medical attention to rule out anemia. If the heavy bleeding is disrupting work, school, or social activities, or if the periods are irregular and lasting longer than seven days, she must visit the doctor. Investigation is important especially if there is significant discomfort, such as severe pain or cramps that impact daily life.
Is it normal to have irregular periods?
In irregular periods, the difference in the time interval between two menstrual cycles varies from cycle to cycle. Usually, girls experience irregularity during the first two to three years after getting their first periods and the same is true for a woman who is about to hit menopause. Periods can become temporarily irregular due to stress, weight gain or loss, travel or hormonal medicines. However, if it’s a constant issue, then medical help should be sought.
What are the treatments to have normal and regular periods?
There are several options available like hormonal and non-hormonal medicines, that a doctor can prescribe depending on the clinical situation. The use of contraceptives can reduce heavy bleeding. Besides, there are medicines to reduce the passage of blood clots. Additionally, a hysteroscopy procedure may be performed to investigate and treat any issues within the uterus (like polyps) that might be causing irregular bleeding.
What lifestyle changes do you recommend to have a healthy menstrual cycle?
Having a home-cooked balanced diet is paramount. Besides, regular exercise and proper sleep are necessary. A sudden increase or decrease in weight is considered unhealthy. Again, even if your weight is in check, regular exercise is needed to ensure the smooth functioning of the body. Avoid smoking and regular consumption of alcohol. Nowadays, it is observed that hormonal imbalance has become common due to the increased consumption of fast food and packaged food that contains preservatives. On a positive note; women today, have become more aware and are proactive in consulting their doctors when they encounter the first alarming signs with changes in the periods.
