Robots to Tackle Thane’s Drains
An announcement made in the budget claims that a robotic system developed by IIT Bombay will be implemented at 10 locations on an experimental basis.
There are approximately 300 km of drains within the Thane Municipal Corporation area. These drains flow through various parts of the city and eventually meet the creek. In recent years, the practice of throwing garbage into these drains has increased. The cleaning is done once a year before the monsoon to prevent flooding. Manual labour is used to clean the waste from the city’s drains, but it is not done effectively.
The Corporation has introduced a special system, robotic assistance, to remove plastic and floating material from the drains.
A patented system developed by IIT Bombay will be installed at 10 locations in the city and along the creek’s edge.
