Survival on the line for UPW, Supremacy beckons RCB

Two teams placed at opposite ends of the spectrum in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 will lock horns on Thursday at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, with contrasting ambitions driving them into a high-stakes encounter. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), already assured of a playoff berth, will play their final league-stage match, while UP Warriorz (UPW) step out for their penultimate fixture with their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

When the two sides last met on 12 January at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, it was a one-sided contest. RCB thrashed UPW by nine wickets, chasing down a modest target of 144 with ease and 47 balls to spare. Former UPW all-rounder, now turning out in RCB colours, produced a power-packed 85 off just 40 deliveries to make light work of the chase. Captain Smriti Mandhana’s trademark elegance, combined with Harris’ brute force, ensured a comprehensive victory for the WPL 2024 champions.

Since that encounter, RCB have won three of their five matches, while UPW have managed two wins from four. However, momentum has slightly dipped for RCB, who are coming off back-to-back defeats against Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians after a five-match winning streak. Despite having already qualified, plenty remains at stake. A victory here would seal direct entry into the final, sparing them the eliminator. Even in defeat, RCB will hope the margin is minimal, while also keeping an eye on Gujarat Giants’ result against Mumbai Indians.

From RCB’s perspective, much will hinge on Mandhana, the team’s leading run-scorer. Richa Ghosh’s role in the middle order will be equally crucial. Their bowling, however, has been the standout feature of the campaign. Lauren Bell has consistently set the tone inside the powerplay, well supported by Indian stars Shreyanka Patil and Sayali Satghare. Add to that the all-round capabilities of Nadine de Klerk, and RCB remain a formidable unit.

For UP Warriorz, the equation is far simpler — survival. A win keeps their playoff hopes alive; a loss would draw the curtains on their WPL 2026 campaign. Their task, however, has been made tougher by the absence of in-form batter Phoebe Litchfield, who has been ruled out due to injury. England wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones has been named as her replacement.

Once again, the spotlight will be firmly on captain Meg Lanning. She has produced match-winning performances countless times for Australia, but the lingering question remains: can she do it for UPW when it matters most? Lanning alone cannot carry the side across the line. She will need significant contributions from the likes of Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma and Harleen Deol if UPW are to rise to the occasion.

With UP Warriorz fighting to stay alive and Royal Challengers Bengaluru chasing a coveted top-spot finish, expect a fiercely contested battle — one where leaders like Mandhana and Lanning will be determined to steer their teams towards very different, yet equally defining, goals.
