India’s Achilles’ Heel in World Cups? New Zealand

No team has troubled India more in ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups than New Zealand. That’s hardly comforting news for Indian fans. But the Women in Blue can take solace in their slightly better record against the White Ferns at home.

As Navi Mumbai braces itself for what could be the most crucial league clash of this World Cup, India and New Zealand lock horns in a virtual knockout. Three semifinal spots are already sealed, leaving one final berth up for grabs. Co-hosts Sri Lanka are also in the mix and, with one game left against Pakistan, will back themselves to sneak in. However, a win today for India would all but knock both Sri Lanka and New Zealand out of contention.

India and New Zealand still have one league match remaining after this. India against Bangladesh and New Zealand against four-time champions England, making tonight’s encounter a “do or die”, particularly for the White Ferns.

India enter this game on the back of three heartbreaking defeats, all against teams that have already qualified for the semis. Five games into the competition, uncertainty still looms over their playing XI. In their previous outing against England, Renuka Singh Thakur replaced Jemimah Rodrigues amid debates over the missing sixth bowling option. Thakur was economical but wicketless. Will India revert to Rodrigues, especially after falling agonisingly short by four runs? Either way, if India are to keep their campaign alive, one of the captain or vice-captain must anchor the innings deep.

New Zealand, meanwhile, have shown consistency in selection, making only tactical tweaks, rotating between Bree Illing and Lea Tahuhu based on match-ups. They started their campaign with two defeats, bounced back against Bangladesh, but were then frustrated by rain in their last two fixtures. With the Navi Mumbai forecast again hinting at showers in the evening, the White Ferns camp will be hoping the weather gods don’t intervene once more.

Amidst the festive Diwali buzz, can India light up the night with some fireworks of their own? With everything on the line, expect nothing short of a ‘cracker’ of a contest in Navi Mumbai this thrilling Thursday.
