Amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, Indian Railways, on Saturday, stated that additional 80 special train services will be started from September 12, and the reservations for which will begin from September 10.

Railway board chairman VK Yadav said these 80 trains will run in addition to the 230 trains already in operation. He also said that trains will operate whenever there is a demand from states.

Rail travel was banned during the lockdown period. Moreover, the number of trains was also reduced. However, in the fourth phase of lockdown relaxation, the Railway Ministry seems to be taking steps to increase the number of special trains.

As festivals are around the corner, railway ministry has decided to increase the number of trains.  There will be a spike in demand for rail travel during Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. In view of this, it has been decided to start 80 new special trains, stated Railway officials.

These special trains will run to and fro from Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna and Delhi. Discussions are currently underway with the Maharashtra and West Bengal governments. At present, 230 express trains are being run under the term- special railways which include 30 Rajdhani Expresses.
